Segan scores 10 goals as sophomore at W&M
Several Northwestern Lehigh graduates competed on college athletic teams during the fall season.
An unfortunate ACL injury forced Sarah Segan to miss her freshman season on William & Mary’s soccer team. But she has made the most of her return to the field. In a 10-8-2 season for The Tribe, Segan started all 20 games and led the team with 10 goals. Her 31 shots on goal and 22 total points also led the team. She was named to the Colonial Association Athletic Second-Team and also to the All- Rookie team.
The Lehigh University women’s soccer team’s season came to an end about three weeks ago when the Mountain Hawks suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Lafayette in the Patriot League quarterfinals. Sophomore Sabrina Mertz picked up where she left off after a standout freshman season, posting three goals and three assists in Year No. 2. Her nine points tied her for second on the team. Mertz scored a team-high seven goals last year.
Haley Yost’s third cross country season at Eastern Kentucky University ended on a strong note. The former Tiger placed eighth at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in a time of 17:36.2, the third-fastest Colonel to cross the finish line. In the NCAA Southeast Regional, she placed 63rd out of 228 participants.
Rachele Cerrone, a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh, completed another successful cross country season for the Panthers. She most recently placed 32nd at the Carnegie Mellon Cross Country Invitational 3.1 meter race in 21:58.5.
After spending her freshman season at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Angela Motolese transferred back closer to the Lehigh Valley to begin her time at Kutztown University. As the women’s soccer team continues to roll this fall, Motolese has fit in the rotation well. As a midfielder, she has seen time in nine games thus far with two shots on goal. The Golden Bears are currently 20-4 overall, finished with a 13-3 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), won the Atlantic Region title, and have earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four.
Two former Tigers recently finished their sophomore seasons on the Moravian College football team. Sophomore defensive back Frank Dangello and sophomore offensive lineman George Haddad were a part of the Greyhounds’ 5-5 season this past fall.
Wide receiver Cam Richardson is in the midst of his second collegiate season at Lehigh University where the Mountain Hawks are shooting for history. Lehigh went a perfect 6-0 in Patriot League play and will play New Hampshire on Saturday in the NCAA Division I FCS tournament’s first round game.
