Potential win over the Kids has ‘everyone on board’
For Catasauqua, a win over Northampton surely can quickly turn a dismal end of the season into a productive one.
“This is our Super Bowl,” said senior wide receiver Ryan Greene. “Everybody is really on board with that. We know what we went through this year, and a win can help us forgot all the bad feelings.”
The Roughies will take Alumni Field Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in the 94th annual meeting between the small-town rivals. Catty will look to reverse the fate from the previous two seasons in which Northampton won both contests, last year in a 40-26 victory.
Prior to that, Catty had won three consecutive contests, but they trail in the overall series, 56-33-4.
A victory would be a high note for Catty, which enters the game with a four-game losing streak, their last defeat being a 48-20 loss to Northwestern that left them with an overall 2-8 mark. During their four-game losing streak, the Roughies have been outscored, 178-53, and a defeat would leave them with their worst season mark since the 2006 season when the team finished 3-8.
The Roughies won their second game of the season in a 39-31 victory over Northern Lehigh that evened their mark at 1-1 after they lost a tussle against Salisbury, 38-24. They then lost a tight 24-14 game against Pen Argyl before they were blown out by Saucon Valley, 55-0.
From there, Catty traveled to Palisades and they were in a 13-all halftime tie before they appeared sluggish in a second half in which they were outscored, 30-0.
But Catty did rally for a 43-26 win over winless Wilson the following week. However, the Roughies missed a chance to qualify for the Class 2A district playoffs as they couldn’t defeat Palmerton at home.
It was another example of a season of inconsistencies for the Roughies.
“We played at times like we could beat anyone,” said junior quarterback Andrew Brett. “But then things just stopped. I don’t know what it is. But this game is huge for us.”
Brett, who is in his first full season at the controls, will enter the contest with 179 completions from 257 attempts for 1,835 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
His has benefitted from an effective trio of receivers led by Greene, who has caught 54 balls for 544 yards with five touchdowns. Junior Miguel Hernandez has 52 catches for 723 yards and six touchdowns, and fellow junior Corey Raysely has 39 catches for 271 yards with a touchdown.
Senior KJ Reiss is the Roughies’ leading ball carrier with 623 yards on 128 carries and six touchdowns. The Roughies have scored an average of 18.6 per game, but they have allowed 39.5 point per contest.
If there is any immediate consolation, Northampton will enter the game with an overall 1-10 mark with the Konkrete Kids earning their lone win in the last game in a 21-0 shutout over Upper Merion Nov. 4.
