Leftover yearbooks for sale

Catasauqua High School yearbooks from many years past are being offered for sale by this year’s yearbook staff.

In order to meet minimum book order requirements, the staff has often had to purchase more books than were actually ordered by students.

In recent years, according to yearbook adviser Daniel Wismer, “Brunalba” sales have decreased, leaving a debt of often several thousand dollars each year.

Wismer says the debt has grown in close correlation to the rise in use of social media.

“As Facebook and Twitter have grown, student purchases of the yearbook have dropped accordingly,” he told The Press last week. “This inverse relationship poses a challenge for the yearbook.”

In 2016, only 102 of the required 200 minimum books purchased from the printer were sold. Despite renewed efforts to advertise and boost sales, this number has remained nearly flat in recent years. This leaves the Yearbook Club to raise funds to fill the gap.

The 2016 yearbook cost $5,523.91 to produce after all purchased books were deducted.

“With $1,723.91 still to pay off from the 2016 book, we will now be billed for the 2017 book, adding another $5-6,000 in debt,” Wismer said.

As part of this ongoing effort, the Yearbook Club is selling past surplus yearbooks. The gift of a yearbook for a CHS alumni who did not get one upon graduation could be a very special holiday memory.

Books are $15 each or four for $50 and may be picked up in the main office. Checks should be made to “CHS Yearbook.” Books reserved by email must be picked up and paid for within five school days, or they will be made available for sale to others.

To inquire about availability or to purchase a book, email Daniel Wismer at wismerd@cattysd.org with “old yearbook sale” in the subject box.
