American Legion Post 215 held its annual Veterans Day dinner Nov. 12.
Helmut Fried, recently installed as post commander, made opening remarks to veterans gathered for the event.
“At every Veterans Day dinner, there is always one table set for POWs who could not be with us,” Fried said. “There is a single rose in the vase for family and a red ribbon.”
Larry Tait played taps for the veterans who have died.
“We used to get 120 people at these dinners, but we are losing our World War II veterans at a quicker pace,” Fried said.
There is a scattering of Korean War vets and Vietnam era vets as members.
“We are not attracting many of the veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.
Legion members and their friends reminisced about wartime experiences and coming home after the war.
The dignified dinner showed the respect each of these veterans had for their comrades in arms.
