EHS beats Stroudsburg in semifinal

The Emmaus boys soccer team advanced through last Tuesday’s District 11 Class 4A semifinal with a 3-a win over Stroudsburg.

The Hornets got goals from Callen Reid, Nick Cari and Kacper Grycel in the win, which avenged a 3-0 loss to the Mountaineers back on Sept. 23.

“It was the lowest point in our season,” said Emmaus head coach John Cari. “They put it to us. Our kids didn’t forget it. We made some adjustments to make a difference out there.

“We’ve been playing hard defense and I’m proud of our effort [in the semifinal]. We found three goals and did a good job keeping them out. That’s a high-powered team with two good forwards.”

Emmaus went up 1-0 when Reid scored off a corner play with just four minutes and 49 seconds into the game.

Stroudsburg tied it with 22:50 left in the first half.

The Hornets got the game-winning goal from Nick Cari, on an assist from Jonathan Heberlein, with 33:18 left in the first half.

Grycel’s insurance goal came on a penalty kick. After Heberlein stole the ball and midfield and found Kevin Williams open in front of the net, Williams drew a foul in the box and the Hornets were awarded the kick.

“When I saw Kevin fall down, I knew it was a penalty,” said Grcyel. “I got excited because I knew there was nothing that was going to stop me from putting that in the back of the net. Stepped up, faked right and put it left.”

Stroudsburg keeper Christian Beebe dove right and Grycel tapped it to the other side to seal the win.
