WHS girls eliminated by Stroudsburg

Whitehall’s girls’ soccer season came to an unexpected end on Tuesday night after losing in overtime to Stroudsburg 2-1 in the District 11 4A semifinal at Nazareth High School.

“I think we did [surprise ourselves]. We started off kind of rocky in the beginning of the season,” said Stroudsburg forward, Amber Quinn. “We don’t focus on the other team’s style; we focus on ourselves, and we’re a better team than we were because we’re clicking.”

The Zephyrs, seeded second, and the Mounties, seeded sixth, met in the regular season when Whitehall won 3-2.

“Playing Whitehall was one of our hardest fought games,” said Stroudsburg goalkeeper April Manhart. “Since I was a freshman, I’ve wanted to beat Whitehall, and it’s nice to beat a Valley team.”

Quinn made that possible, scoring the first goal of the game with approximately 32:00 remaining in the first half.

At 22:50, Whitehall forward, Kate Bonshak, tied it.

Shortly before the first half ended, Whitehall goalkeeper Kay Solderitch collided into a Stroudsburg player and a Whitehall teammate, leaving her injured and out for the rest of the game. Solderitch was replaced by freshman, Grace Clary.

When a scoreless second half led to overtime, Quinn struck again with 2.8 seconds remaining.

“It was a big sigh of relief,” she said. “I knew I couldn’t let my team down.”

Whitehall ended its season with a record of 13-6-1.

Stroudsburg, currently 14-6-2, will take on an undefeated Parkland team in the district final on Thursday.
