Catty falls to So. Lehigh
With each passing game, Andrew Brett continues to adjust to being the starting quarterback for the Roughies this season.
Having nine games under his belt, the junior has developed into one of the more consistent signal callers in the Lehigh Valley as well as one of the most overall productive field generals. Brett has thrown over 1,500 yards this season.
Like his teammates, however, Brett likely would trade some of his statistics for wins.
The Roughies suffered their third consecutive defeat and sixth out of the last seven games when they suffered a 42-7 loss at Southern Lehigh last Friday. With the defeat, Catty dropped to 2-7 overall with two games left to play.
“On our first drive, we got stopped on a fourth-and-three,” recalled Brett, who was 16 for 20 with 138 yards and a touchdown. “After that, I made a bad read and one of their kids picked it off for a pick six (touchdown). From there, we just couldn’t get going.
“I didn’t think I played badly. We had trouble converting our third downs.”
Catasauqua fell behind 14-0 at the end of the opening quarter and trailed 35-0 at halftime. It marked the second straight week they fell behind by a large margin. Palmerton was ahead 25-0 after two quarters the previous week. Against Southern Lehigh, senior wide receiver Ryan Greene caught nine balls for 84 yards and was the recipient of Brett’s touchdown.
Brett and his teammates believed they could turn the corner toward a district run after they battled Notre Dame three weeks ago, pulling within 28-20 before turnovers helped flip the game to a 42-28 deficit.
“We were right there with Notre Dame and played well,” added Brett. “We thought we could beat Palmerton. I don’t think there is any main reason for the problem. We still want to finish strong.”
If the Roughies had beaten Palmerton, they could have put themselves in a prime spot for a playoff spot. Instead, Catty will look to regain some pride with wins over Northwestern and Northampton in the upcoming weeks.
Catty will welcome Northwestern to Alumni Field this Friday in a battle for a potential playoff spot on the line for the Roughs.
The Tigers were in the running for a spot in the Class 4A bracket, but their three consecutive losses ended their run.
“It has been frustrating for all of us and it hurts,” added Brett about his team’s troubles. “But we’ll give a good effort and see what we can do in the next two games.”
