“Rent”’s due:The 20th anniversary production national tour of “Rent,” the landmark rock musical written by Jonathan Larson, stops at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the State Theatre Center for the Arts, Easton. “For the past 20 years, ‘Rent’ has touched the lives of audiences around the world from Broadway to regional productions to high school auditoriums,” said the tour’s producer Stephen Gabriel. “Rent,” based on Puccini’s “La Bohème,” follows a year in the lives of seven struggling artists. The musical had its world premiere Feb. 13, 1996, and transferred to Broadway on April 29, 1996. “Rent” received the 1996 Tony Award for Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Evan Ensign restaged the 20th anniversary tour, with Marlies Yearby (Tony nomination, “Rent”) as choreographer, based on the original direction by Michael Greif (Tony nominations, “Rent”). “Rent” was previously presented at the State Theatre in February and September 2002 and April 2006. Patti does “Broadway”:Two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone returns to the State Theatre for the Arts, Easton, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4, for “Don’t Monkey with Broadway,” with an appearance by the Parkland High School Chorale. In the concert, LuPone explores, through her interpretations of show tunes by Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jule Styne, Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, her life-long love affair with Broadway. LuPone received her first Tony Award in 1978 as the title character in “Evita” and again received a Tony for Actress in a Musical in 2008 for her role in “Gypsy.” LuPone also received two Grammy Awards in 2008. LuPone returns to the State Theatre for the first time since February 2011 when she performed with fellow Tony Award recipient Mandy Patinkin, with whom she starred in Broadway’s original “Evita.” The Parkland Chorale is a select vocal ensemble of 40 mixed voices.
