Elger E. “Bud” Landis

Elger E. “Bud” Landis, 88, of Luther Crest Retirement Community, South Whitehall Township, formerly of Macungie, died Oct. 6, 2016, in the Health Care Center at Luther Crest. He was the beloved husband of Bernice “Bea” (Bugglin) Landis. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary Oct. 10. Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Elger E. Landis and Alice C. (Swan) Landis Balcer and the stepson of the late John P. Balcer.

A 1945 graduate of North Arlington High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre and the Atlantic Coast during World War II. After returning home from the service, he attended Fairleigh Dickinson Junior College. In 1950, he answered the call to serve in the U.S. Navy working in harbor defense during the Korean War.

He began his career at Pittsburgh Plate Glass as an industrial coatings sales representative. He joined New Jersey Bell Telephone in 1957 in management and enjoyed 28 years in various departments, retiring in 1985 as general manager of the directory. He was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, McNulty Chapter.

A member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Allentown, he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at various church parishes over the years.

When his children were young, he was involved in youth athletics, coaching Little League baseball, Babe Ruth baseball, CYO basketball and soccer.

He was a member of American Legion Alexander Stover Post 37, North Arlington, N.J.; Knights of Columbus, Father O’Hanlon Council #4678, State College and had served on the Mendham, N.J. school board. For many years he was involved in the Medford Lakes, N.J. Canoe Carnival.

He is survived by his wife; children, Linda and her husband L. Steven Peralta, of Mendham, N.J., John and his wife Edna, of Dover, N.J., Kurt and his wife Kathy, of Andover, N.J., Judith and her partner Lori Gallagher, of Souderton, James, CDR, USN, ret., and his wife Amy, of Beaufort, S.C.; five grandchildren; three great-grandsons.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the church, 18103 or the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal, 474 East Chelten Ave., Philadelphia, 19144, or to the Luther Crest Benevolent Fund, 800 Hausman Road, Allentown, 18104.

Arrangements were made by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
