Flores 15th for girls
Whitehall High School’s cross country team competed at the East Penn Conference Cross Country Championships on Tuesday at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course.
Sophomore, Juanita Flores, placed 15th in the girls’ race with a time of 21:29.99, the best finish for the Zephyrs.
“It was so hot, and I felt tired toward the end, but I was relieved and wanted to just collapse,” Flores said. “I think I’m a hill runner, and I took advantage of that, and I had a kick at the end and took advantage of that.”
Flores started off on the slow side, trying to get a feel for the other runners around her, and paced herself mostly with Stroudsburg’s Jaida Fenn.
“I knew I had to go out not so fast and wait until the end,” said Flores. “The breeze helped cool down my body, but it made my mouth extremely dry.”
Rachel Herr placed 24th with a time of 21:47.68, and Devon Roberts was 36th with a time of 22:38.73, also for the Zephyrs.
Stroudsburg’s girls captured a 1-2-3 finish when Liberty’s Raisa Kochmaruk, who had led the entire race, slowed and stumbled as she approached the finish line and could not complete the race.
Allana Powlette was the overall winner with a time of 19:22.47, followed by Amy Conboy, and Michelle Joyce.
In the boys’ race, Whitehall sophomore, Caleb Staub, placed 39th with a time of 18:58.32. Andrew Hawk was 87th with a time of 20:10.53.
Pleasant Valley’s Seth Slavin was the winner of the boys’ race with a time of 16:27.94.
In boys’ team results, Parkland took first place with 32 points, followed by Easton with 74 points. Whitehall finished 13th with 379 points.
In girls’ team results, Stroudsburg took first place with 31 points, followed by Easton with 96 points. Whitehall finished seventh with 173 points.
