Revolutionary War camp set up at historic house

Revolutionary War reenactors set up camp on the green at the George Taylor House Sept. 10.

“This was a great exhibition for all who attended,” said Emily Zacharda, the borough’s director for the George Taylor House. “The George Taylor House was open to visitors. Word must be getting around that we have a place of historical interest. Most of the people who attended this weekend had never been here before.”

Early in the day, the reenactors gave a detailed explanation of how battles were conducted during the 18th century. After the explanation and details, the reenactors conducted a battle scene, complete with a pesky loyalist.

In the second part of the day, the emphasis was on the procedures for carrying weapons. There were certain drills and positions as part of the training process.

“The way the weapons were held and handled is done so that someone doesn’t accidentally hit another soldier,” Captain Thomas Verenna said.

He went on to explain that many of the men in the Revolutionary Army were associates.

“The associates were men who joined the ranks for a short period of time, but still had jobs to go to,” he said. “They were a little rusty on all the details of marching and handling weapons.”

The encampment featured samples of beef stew from a Colonial recipe.

Local reenactor Richard Guth gets a visit from friends Randy Histler and Ida and Jessica Histler, who were joined by Tammy Braun. Guth took them on a personal tour of the camp grounds.
