Luther Roy Campbell Jr.
Luther Roy Campbell, Jr., 88, of Emmaus, died peacefully Oct. 5, 2016, surrounded by his family in St. Luke’s Hospice House.
He was the husband of Jo-Ann (Reinheimer) Campbell.
Born Aug. 19, 1928, in Allentown, he was the son of the late L. Roy Campbell and Winifred (Pearce) Campbell.
A graduate of The St. Andrews School, Philadelphia, and The University of Penn’s Wharton School of Business, he was a brother in Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and served as its treasurer, vice president and president.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1950-54 and served on the USS Van Valkenburg.
He was a partner in his father’s CPA firm, Campbell, Rappold and Yurasits, LLP, Allentown, for many years and was the managing partner for 20 years.
He served as a former director of the Regional Board of First Union Bancorporation, was a former director of First Fidelity Bancorp., former director of Fidelcor Inc, and former director of Merchants Bank NA, all predecessors of Wells Fargo.
He also chaired the loan committee for Merchants Bank of Allentown for many years and was also a former director of Old Guard Insurance Group, Harrisburg.
He was an elder at The First Presbyterian Church, Allentown, where he served on the board of trustees, was president of the board of trustees, and president of the board of deacons.
A longtime member of Lehigh Country Club, he was chair of the membership committee for 27 years and also an avid tennis player.
He served on the boards of the YMCA of Allentown, University of Penn Alumni Club and the Livingston Club, Allentown.
A member of Kiwanis Foundation, Allentown-Lehigh County Chamber of Commerce and Lehigh County Authority, he was a former chairman of the Lower Macungie Township Authority.
He was a former private pilot and owner of a Piper Archer II.
He loved tennis, gardening and Bonita Bay, Fla., and he was Boo to his five grandchildren whom he loved deeply.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his step-daughter Karen Pearce Sonier and her husband, Michael, of Center Valley and their children Megan and Tim; stepson Richard Pearce II and his wife, Kristen, of Orefield and their children Amber, Nikki and Ashley; brother David Pearce Campbell and his wife, Mary, of Richmond Va. and his nieces Margaret Campbell Ullrich and her husband, Chris, of Charlotte N.C. and their children Tinsley, Annie and Caroline; Winifred Campbell of Richmond, and his nephew David Campbell Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Richmond, and their children Pearce and Jacob.
A Celebration of his Life will take place 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14 in the sanctuary of The First Presbyterian Church, 3231 W. Tilghman St., Allentown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the church.
