Coplay: Halloween parade is set for Oct. 18
At Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association’s Halloween parade Oct. 18, a tradition for the association going back the mid-1950s, Whitehall High School’s Marching Zephyr Band will be joined by East Hills Middle School band from Bethlehem Area School District, Wind Gap Eagles Drum & Bugle Corps, Allentown Hobo “Almost” Marching Band and Rajah Oriental Band.
The parade kicks off 7 p.m. with fire trucks from companies across the area to celebrate Fire Prevention Month.
The route begins at Ninth and Chestnut streets, continues east on Chestnut Street, then south on Second Street to Hokendauqua Street, where it disbands.
While not the biggest parade in the region, the large crowds that line the sidewalks say it is one of the most entertaining Halloween events.
Parade participants are treated to hot dogs, beverages and snacks as guests of Coplay Saengerbund.
Rain date is Oct. 25.

It took a while, but construction and repaving of North Front Street, south for two blocks and more, are now completed and open to traffic. The job included many new curbs and sidewalks being rebuilt.
The project on this stretch of the road is the first makeover in decades.

The scaffolding is now removed from one of the Saylor Cement Kilns, which has undergone a restoration, steel work, mortar work and brick alignment and repairs for the last several months.
While it may be some time for similar work on the other kilns, representing the oldest and only such type in the United States where Portland cement was manufactured, any talk of the other kilns being demolished, is just that - talk. The outcry for such a movement to occur would have a serious backlash, locally, regionally, across the nation and from foreign entities.
