From 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 15, Tri-Boro Soccer Club will host a bicycle safety clinic in the memory of Sage Stauffer, an avid soccer player and former Tri-Boro member who passed away in 2010 at age 12. The event will be held at Whitehall Recreation Fields, 2600 Range Road, Whitehall. Rain date is Oct. 22.

Sage was a defender and team captain on the U13B Tri-Boro Inferno travel team when he died. The team had just won its first soccer game in the 2010 KidsPeace Tournament. One week later, Sage was tragically killed when the chain on his bicycle snapped, and he flew over the handlebars on his bike by the park in Catasauqua.

Sage’s mom decided to turn this tragedy into an opportunity to help others by creating the Sage Stauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament, held every August from 2011-15 at Catasauqua High School. The proceeds raised from these tourneys are used to provide scholarships and host bicycle safety clinics throughout the Lehigh Valley, making sure kids’ bikes are well maintained and that they don’t have the same issue that took Sage’s life.

In the first tournament in 2011, Sage’s Tri-Boro Inferno soccer team pulled a miracle out of a hat (with the help of a 12-year-old boy watching his team play) by scoring a goal with under 30 seconds remaining in the last game to take first place. It was unreal the emotions felt that day by all. The goal is to continue to learn from Sage and share his passion.

Fitness Central technicians will be on hand to do safety checks and recommendations on repairs needed. They will not do major repairs on site because of time constraints but will refer people to the store for any major work that needs to be done. Bicycle helmets will be available for free to children who do not own one on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Dialed Action Sports will be on hand to wow the kids with BMX tricks while educating them about bicycle safety. The BMX show will cover the importance of wearing helmets and protective gear, proper safety on the roads and the impact of concussions.

In addition, the memorial event will hold a raffle for one lucky recipient to win a Coca-Cola 10-speed bike. A minimum of $150 needs to be raised on the raffle before the bike will be raffled off. Tickets will be available during the event.

This clinic is free to all Tri-Boro members who attend.
