Golf plays in EPC tourney
Last week’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Golf Tournament served as a continuation of the progress established by the Whitehall golf team this season.
The tournament, held at Woodstone Golf Club, saw Whitehall finish 13th among the EPC field, posting a 423 score.
Head coach John Conrad said that they shaved more than 40 strokes off 2015’s total, clearly indicating that this year has seen steady improvement from the Zephyr players. That’s they way it’s been all year for the Zephyrs who totaled three wins on the season. They were lowering scores almost every time out, setting a new low with their 453 against East Stroudsburg North.
“It’s getting better and better,” said Conrad.
Conrad said that “each and every player got better” and is looking for good things from his young squad in the future. They’ll be looking to climb up the ladder among the teams in the EPC, and this year proved to be a good foundation.
In the EPC tourney, Patrick Skinner finished with a 96 to lead the Zephs. Hunter Kern shot a 108, while Ben Antonchak finished with a 110 and Tyler Ringenberger had a 111.
The boys individual winner was Nazareth’s Kevin Scherr who shot a 74. That was followed by a trio of players who finished with 79, including Blue Eagle Victor Tavares, along with Pocono Mountain East’s tandem of Brian Whelan and Brett Wagner.
Whitehall also had a dazzling performance by sophomore Leah Coleman. Coleman finished 8th among the field of 19 female competitors, posting a 108.
Nazareth won the team tournament for the second year in a row, shooting a 320. Allentown Central Catholic followed with a 339, while Emmaus was third finishing with a 342.
The Zephyrs will now concentrate on the district competition which gets underway at Olde Homestad Golf Club in New Tripoli. Skinner and Coleman will be Whitehall’s two representatives at the D-11 championships.
