Catasauqua gets a big victory over Wilson
Catasauqua had plenty of positives in their 43-26 win over Wilson last week, and they hope to build on some much-needed momentum.
With the win, the Roughies did snap a three-game losing streak, one in which saw them struggle with consistency and execution. During the span, they were outscored 132-31.
Their previous outing, a 43-13 loss to Palisades, a game in which they had tied at 13 at halftime, only to sputter from a revved first-half.
The Roughies (2-4) found themselves in a similar situation against the winless Warriors (0-6) as the two teams were knotted at 14-all at halftime.
This time around, the Roughies finally opened up the game in the final quarter after they held a 29-26 lead. The Roughies scored 14 points in the final stanza, as they managed to unleash their running game behind K.J. Reiss and Derrick Rodriguez.
Reiss finished the game with 127 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 11 and 34 yards. Rodriguez had 95 yards on 13 carries and had a 34-yard touchdown run.
“They were playing us heavy on the pass throughout the first half, and we went to our running game,” said head coach Phil Dorn. “K.J. Reiss and Derrick Rodriguez had fantastic games. They were able to have their games because our offensive line was playing at a high level.
“We kept running the ball and it turned into a complete game for us.”
Dorn knew his team would have their hands full trying to stop Wilson running back Job Goodman, who ran for a game-high 191 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown.
Quarterback Cameron Clark scored three touchdowns on the ground and he ran for 46 yards.
“He (Goodman) is one of the best in the league,” said Dorn. ‘’He kept them in the game. It was a tight game in the first half, and we managed to turn the game in our favor.”
Dorn also was impressed with quarterback Andrew Brett, who was an efficient 14 for 17 for 204 yards with three touchdowns. For the season, Brett has completed 105 of 150 attempts for 1,156 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his first season calling the signals for the Roughies.
“Brett has done a nice job for us,” stated Dorn. “He has been throwing at a high percentage and has gotten the ball to a number of receivers. He has shown the skill to have a solid season for us. He looks pretty comfortable out there for us. He is a quiet leader and doesn’t get bothered too easy. It is the perfect potion for a quarterback.”
With the win, Catty slid into the fourth spot in the PIAA District 11 Class 2A playoff seedings. The district will take the top four from the six-team field. Palmerton is the lone team with a Class 2A position on their remaining schedule, and the Roughies can virtually cement their spot with some wins down the road.
“We talk about that every week,” added Dorn. “But we tell the kids not to look at those things and just go out and play. We just have to go out and win as many as we can and things will take care of themselves.
