Big test next for Roughs
Coming off arguably their most impressive win of the season, the Roughies likely will face their biggest challenge of the year.
The Roughies will travel to Green Pond Friday night to meet Notre Dame, the only undefeated team in the Colonial League with an unblemished 6-0 mark and a remaining cast from their PIAA District 11 Championship last season.
Last week, Catty scored 29 second-half points in a 43-26 victory over Wilson in which they registered 435 yards of total offense, having nearly a perfect balance as they had 231 yards on the ground and 204 yards in the air. It was their largest scoring output of the season and also snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Roughies will look to keep their running game in gear behind K.J. Reiss (127 yards) and Derrick Rodriguez (95 yards), who were a perfect tandem against Wilson. Quarterback Andrew Brett had time to throw and had an effective night, connecting on 14 of 17 attempts with three touchdowns.
Brett will again throw to the trio of Miguel Hernandez (31 receptions, 454 yards, 5 TDs), Ryan Greene (28-372, 3 TDs) and Corey Raysley (27-182, 1 TD) to provide reliable targets.
“We ran the ball well and the offensive line did a great job,” noted head coach Phil Dorn of his team’s performance against Wilson. “Brett has been coming into his own, and our receivers have done a great job.
“We expect Corey Raysley to have a breakout game soon. Maybe it can be this week, but we know we have a tall task ahead.”
Notre Dame will take to its turf with two consecutive shutouts, the latest in a 21-0 blanking of Palmerton in a game in which they led 3-0 at halftime.
But the Crusaders pieced together a methodical drive that resulted in a touchdown run by quarterback Cole DeFranco, who hit Mitch Daniel on a 62-yard scoring play early in the fourth quarter.
DeFranco completed 19 of 30 passes for 194 yards, and Daniel has been the team’s leading rusher all season.
Dorn doesn’t expect to see any different from last year’s district champs. The Roughies lost a 49-22 decision last year after they trailed 28-14 at the half.
“Notre Dame will run a spread offense and they will look to throw the ball deep or dink it on you,” added Dorn. “Daniel is as good as a back as we will see. They can stretch the field and are as talented as they were last year.
“This will be a gut-check for us and our kids are looking forward to it. This will be a tall order for us, but we will be ready.”
