Upper Macungie police educate parents about using safety seats

Upper Macungie police recently visited various day cares and schools in the township during National Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 18-24, as part of a child safety/seat belt enforcement and education initiative.

On Sept. 20, Upper Macungie police were on hand at The Goddard School, 8230 Hamilton Blvd., Breinigsville.

Jill Woosnam, on-site owner of The Goddard School, said she was thrilled to offer this opportunity to her students.

Police Officer Robert Djevharian gave some car seat safety tips to Brie Marks of Breiningsville, whose daughters, Ava 2, and Amia, 1 month, use child safety car seats.

The officers visited the day cares to educate parents about the new state law that went into effect in August.

The goal is to keep children facing the rear of the vehicle until age 2.

Officer Djevharian spoke with The Press at the school.

“Studies have shown it is significantly safer to ride rear facing,” said Djevharian. “There is no rush to turn a child forward, the longer the better, as long as the child does not go over the height or weight restrictions of the seat.”
