John W. Scanlon

John W. Scanlon, 98, of Maple Glen, formerly of Emmaus, died Sept. 2, 2016. He was the husband of the late Gladys M. (Cosgrove) Scanlon and Norma B. (Beaty) Scanlon. Born in Kane, and raised in Franklin, he was the eldest son of Michael F. and Mayme E. (Sieger) Scanlon.

He began his career, of 43 years, with Buckeye Pipeline Company as a telegrapher and retired in 1980 as director of oil movements. His love of telegraphy carried over into his retirement and his enjoyment of ham radio allowed him to renew friendships from his Signal Corps days of World War II. As a Master Sergeant in the Army Signal Corps, he participated in the invasion of North Africa and Italy. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He served his country once again, as the Director of Transportation, Region 3, of the Petroleum and Gas Unit of the National Defense Executive Reserve from 1967 to 1980.

He is survived by children, John M. and his wife Sue, of Cleveland, Ohio; Robert L. and his wife Bonnie, of Tallahassee, Fla.; Patricia A. and her husband Dr. Andrew Polack, of Maple Glen; Paul W. and his wife Judy, of Butler; Edward J., of Wyndmoor; Ianthe H. McCrea and her husband Paul Stone, of Houston, Texas and Hugh M. and his wife Theresa McCrea, of Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, George R., Franklin; sister, Verona L. Croft, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; granddaughter, Gillian B., Butler.

Graveside services with military honors will be held 1:30 p.m. Nov. 25 in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown. Arrangements are being made by the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus.
