Girls soccer beats Becahi

Whitehall forward, Kate Bonshak, scored back-to-back goals and another to achieve a hat trick in the Zephyrs’ 5-1 soccer victory over Bethlehem Catholic on Monday.

Bonshak’s first goal came in the first half, and with 28:58 left in the second half, Becahi goalkeeper, Kiera Peterson, was pulled way out, giving Bonshak her second opportunity. Then, with 27:25 remaining, Bonshak scored again.

Kylee Cunningham had two goals in the first half, one on a penalty kick, to take a 3-1 halftime lead.

“Kate flicked it over, and I beat the goalkeeper,” said Cunningham, regarding her second goal.

Cunningham has been dealing with shin splints as of late.

“I was able to control the ball. It’s a hard surface [Becahi’s field], but it’s kind of fun because you don’t know where the ball is going. You take chances,” Cunningham said. “[Kiera Peterson] challenged our forwards a lot, and made good saves on one-on-ones.”

Cunningham and Bonshak were credited with assists, as well as Madison Link and Kassidy Cunningham.

Kay Solderitch made five saves for Whitehall, and Peterson made 18 saves for Becahi.

Brooke Bisko scored on an assist by Julia Zambo in the first half for the Hawks.

As of Press deadlines, Whitehall’s record is 6-3-1. The Zephyrs will have played Liberty with a record of 5-4-0 on Tuesday.

“A lot of younger girls stepped up everywhere [this year], and in the midfield, and they’ve done a really good job,” said Cunningham.

On Tuesday, Whitehall topped Liberty 7-0.

The Zephs scored two goals in the first half before putting things away with five in the second half.

Kate Bonshak and Cara Bonshak scored unassisted in the first half for Whitehall.

Kate Bonshak then assisted Kylee Cunningham for a 3-0 lead. About four minutes later, Erica Juliano made it 4-0 on a pass from Cara Bonshak. Two minutes later, Kate Bonshak would score unassisted for a 5-0 advantage.

Sofia Pittas added the sixth goal and McKenzie Wloczewski made it 7-0 on a pass from Kylie Saliby.

The Zephs recorded 23 shots on goal. Kay Solderitch pitched the shutout in net.

In another recent game, Whitehall knocked off East Stroudsburg North 7-0.

Kate Bonshak and Kylie Saliby did all the scoring with Bonshak getting four and Saliby netting three.

Kylee Cunningham had two assists as did Bonshak. Madison Link also added an assist.

The Zephs peppered Eastburg with 40 shots.

Boys

The boys picked up a recent 5-0 win over Eastburg North, exploding for four goals in the second half.

Tony Rodriguez got the Zephs on the board in the first half with a goal off a pass from Zahir Linton.

In the second half, Linton scored two goals and added an assist to help Whitehall pull away.

Linton got the first goal in the second half off a pass from Rodriguez. Then it was Marwa Rajha who scored on a pass from Linton.

Linton again found the back of the net on a pass from Nejmi Kara before Rodriguez finished the scoring on an assist from Rajha.

Bailey Luckenbill made four saves in the win.

Liberty got goals from seven different scorers on Tuesday afternoon and defeated Whitehall 7-2.

In fact, the Hurricanes scored the first seven goals of the match. Talhah Netherlin recorded a goal and two assists for the ’Canes to lead the way.

The Zephs got on the board in the second half. Aziz Atiyeh scored on an assist from Nejmi Kara and then Atiyeh would find the back of the net again, this time on a pass from Tony Rodriguez.
