‘Learning process’ for boys soccer

For the Whitehall boys’ soccer team, it will be a matter of time.

The Zephyrs began this week with an overall 1-6 mark.

They began the season allowing 11 goals in three consecutive shutouts before they registered their first win, a 5-2 decision against Lehighton, Sept. 10.

“It is a learning process for us now to get better,” said head coach Chris Bastidas. “It has been tough, but our kids have been coming along. We knew it would be a struggle as we lost about 10 starters from last year’s team.

“In fact, we began the year with only three guys who have had played at the varsity level. But we believe we have a good system, and the kids have been working really hard. We believe we have some young talent here that can continue to grow.”

Bastidas noted the contribution of Zahir Linton, who had five goals in the team’s first seven games.

He also cited the play of Nejmi Kara and Tony Rodriguez.

“All three of those guys have been playing well,” said Bastidas. “(Linton) has been a steady contributor for us offensively, and both Kara and Rodriguez had been pretty consistent as well. But we have been playing better as an overall unit lately.”

Bastidas also credited the play of goalie Bailey Luckenbill, who has had a busy start to his season. He has impressed with his overall showing and also his performance in a recent 2-0 loss to Emmaus.

“Bailey (Luckenbill) has had a couple of good games for us,” said Bastidas. “He has kept us in games this year. (Luckenbill) made some key saves and some great saves (against Emmaus).”

With a young team, Bastidas realizes development will take some time, but he still remains focused on this season. The Zephyrs faced East Stroudsburg North Wednesday and then will meet Pocono Mountain East Friday.

“We know we can have a good future with this team, but we are not ready to throw away this season,” he said. “We are always building for the future. We play in a very difficult division and a tough conference.

“We believe, though, we can be in every game down the stretch and we can surprise some people as well.”
