Kate Bonshak helps girls top Mounties

Whitehall’s girls’ soccer team raised its record to 4-2-1 on Monday night after defeating Stroudsburg 3-2.

Kate Bonshak scored all three goals for the Zephyrs, the first within the first 30 seconds of play.

“Cara [Bonshak] played me a ball, their goalie came out, I took a touch, and I shot it to the far corner,” she said.

Kate Bonshak’s other two goals also came in the first half.

Stroudsburg’s Amber Quinn put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard first, followed by Becca Meisse’s goal, both of which were also in the first half.

“[At halftime] we changed our shape to be able to have our defenders come into the play,” Kate Bonshak said.

Ella Holmes just missed scoring with a header for the Zephyrs halfway through the second period.

As time began to wind down, Stroudsburg scrambled to score, and with 2:08 remaining on the clock, Meisse took a shot that went just over the net.

“We knew they were under pressure, so we had to stay composed and keep it up the field,” said senior defender, Cara Bonshak.

For Whitehall coach Chris Bleam, the challenge was how to play without Kylee Cunningham, who is injured.

“We had to move some pieces of the puzzle because [Stroudsburg’s] central defender was doing a good job,” he said.
