Girls look to get healthy
As of late last week, the Catasauqua girls soccer team is off to a 2-4 start to their season.
Wins have come over Wilson and Jim Thorpe, but while their record may not be what they hoped for at this point, the team has had its share of tough times.
“We have been plagued by injuries,” said head coach Randy Gillespie. “We currently have three starters on crutches along with many other girls that have banged up ankles, shins and knees.”
So far, losses have come to Northern Lehigh, Saucon Valley, Bangor and Southern Lehigh. Despite that, Gillespie isn’t totally upset with the way the team has played.
“They have been playing well so far but there is always room for improvement,” Gillespie said. “If we can stay healthy we should be able to win more games. The game schedule has been a little hectic and very few practices. Because of the game schedule and the injuries we are having, we can’t push them hard at practices.”
After a win over Wilson, CHS was blanked 5-0 against Saucon Valley before beating Jim Thorpe 2-1 thanks to goals from Hanasia Jenkins and Bekkah Harakal. The team fell to Bangor 5-1 with Amy Huber scoring the lone goal. The Spartans then beat Catty 5-1.
With so many girls in and out of the lineup, Gillespie said there is an ongoing adjusting period with girls having to play all over the field.
“Many of the girls are adjusting well to different formations for certain games and also adjusting to playing many different positions on the field,” Gillespie said. “The team has a year end goal but we are taking one game at a time to hopefully reach that goal.”
Gillespie said Jenkins is leading the team in goals scored followed by Jade Biviano, Amy Huber and Bekkah Harakal. Freshman Madison Hicks is doing an outstanding job as goalkeeper this year. Lindsay Grothmann and Taylor Richards are solid anchors on the defense.
“The entire team is working hard against much larger schools who have numerous subs,” Gillespie said.
