LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Zephs cruise by Eastburg North

With another win on Tuesday, the Whitehall girls volleyball team is getting more familiar with their respective roles, and with one another, and that’s led to some early success.

Their latest victory was a sweep over East Stroudsburg North. They won 25-11, 25-10, 25-10.

That win boosts their record to 3-1 on the year, the lone blemish an opening season loss to Southern Lehigh.

Kristin Spengler had an excellent floor game. The southpaw recorded seven kills and had 13 assists. Throughout the match, she set up her teammates, including Alix Buskirk and Amelia Ballard, who had five and four kills, respectively.

Spengler said that this young group is meshing well.

“I think as this season’s gone on, we’ve gotten better, but I still think we need to push more and more,” said Spengler.

Spengler said that their schedule will start getting more difficult, starting with Wednesday’s match against Liberty High School. Head coach George Cowitch said that Liberty’s currently ranked fourth in the state among AAA teams so that will be a big test for the Zephyrs.

Spengler said that it will be important to keep pushing as they start playing teams in their own division.

Spengler said that in their first game against Southern Lehigh they had to figure out how to play like a team. She said it was tough, but they could have played a lot better.

“I think that now we’ve actually figured out actual routine and what we want to do now,” said Spengler.

During Tuesday’s game, ESN was their own worst enemy. They made numerous unforced errors and had trouble with Whitehall’s service game.

Still, Whitehall made shots when the opportunities presented themselves. Caitlin Kier had five kills and four aces, while Ballard had 11 assists and seven aces to go along with her four kills.

Cowitch said they’ve been hanging their hat on their defensive end so far this season.

“I think that we’re playing great defense,” said Cowitch. “Our defense is really keeping us in games and our offense is getting better.”

Cowitch said that they been working on their offense as the season’s progressed and have made steady improvements.

“I like where we’re at,” he said.

Against the Timberwolves, Cowitch said that they were able to run their offense and did some good things when they had the chance.

Cowitch said that Liberty will present a big challenge, but he feels if they work through their one rotation, that they’ll be able to compete with the Hurricanes.

They’ll also rely on their defense against Liberty, but they’ll need to put the ball on the floor offensively.

“As long as we can be offensive there, I like our chances,” said Cowitch.

In the win against Pocono Mountain East, Spengler led the way with 10 kills. She also had 17 assists and four aces in the 25-22, 25-8, 25-10 victory over the Cardinals. Kier chipped in with five kills, while Buskirk had three. Additionally, Olivia Ballard had 14 digs.
