Roughie Roundup: Field hockey rallies, wins

The Catasauqua field hockey team trailed Wilson 2-1 at one point in the first half Tuesday afternoon, but it would only be for about a minute and a half.

After that point, the Roughs scored five-straight goals to record a 6-2 victory over the Warriors.

Ava Mariana got Wilson on the board just 53 seconds into the game before Kenzie Bradley tied the contest at 1-1 four minutes later with a helper from Jackie Crossley. Mariana would put Wilson up 2-1 and then it was Bradley again evening the score at 2-2 on another assist from Crossley.

Crossley would then put Catty up 3-2 on a pass from Alyssa Proctor and the team never looked back. Bradley would score her third goal of the game on a pass from Trinity Kern to make it 4-2 and close out the first half scoring.

In the second half Selana Safadi and Kern would add insurance. Safadi’s goal was unassisted while it was Proctor setting up Kern for the team’s final score.

Catasauqua beat Salisbury 2-0 in another recent game.

Bradley put Catty up 1-0 in the first half on a pass from Tyra Brown. In the second half, Crossley would score for the 2-0 lead.

Hanna Greenberg made four saves in the shutout victory.

The team lost to Northwestern 2-1 but no other information was available.

The Catty boys soccer team came up with a 2-1 victory over Bangor.

The Roughies led Bangor 2-0 at the half. Cam Ritter and Bryan Contreras scored in the first with Contreras assisting on Ritter’s goal.

Jake Almanzar cut the Bangor deficit to 2-1 on an assist from Dalton Stenlake but couldn’t force overtime. The Slaters had nine shots on goal to Catty’s two. Samir Safadi made eight saves for Catty.

The Roughs are now 3-3 on the season.

Catty also had a 5-1 win over Tamaqua recently.

The boys got off to a fast start with two, first-half goals and it was all they needed in the win.

Bryan Contreras and Cam Ritter again struck in the first half for CHS. Logan Miller would cut the Catty lead to 2-1 for the Raiders. But, the Roughies blew things open in the second half with three goals.

Oscar Cordon made it 3-1 with an assist from Aaron Aranabia. Ritter would pick up his second goal of the game with a helper from Jonathan Dweck to make it 4-1 before Shane Brader made it 5-1 on a setup from Grant Gebhardt.

Catty had five corners to Tamaqua’s four. Samuel Safadi made three saves in the victory for the Roughies. CHS outshot Tamaqua 16-7 in the win.

The Roughs were shutout by Saucon Valley 7-0 in a recent game.

Ben Lehr scored two goals for the Panthers while Joel Thompson had two assists. The Panthers had goals from six different players in the win.

Catty knocked off Jim Thorpe in girls soccer action, 2-1.

Hanasia Jenkins and Bekkah Harakal scored goals for the Roughies in the win. Jenkins had six shots on goal as part of the 12 the team took in total.

Jenkins got Catty on the board first to make it 1-0. But the Olympians Eve Morris tied the game up in the 38th minute to make it 1-1.

Harakal’s goal came in the second half in the 32 minutes.

Catty lost to Bangor in girls soccer, 5-1.

The Slaters had two, first-half goals on their way to the win. Catty’s goal came in the second half.

Kylee Will had three goals for Bangor and also added an assist. Ciarrah Holmqvist chipped in with two assists.

The Roughs goal came from Amy Huber. Catty goalie Madison Hicks faced 23 shots and saved 18 in the loss.

Catty lost to Saucon Valley 5-0. Anna Opgaard scored two goals in the win.

The Catty cross country team competed at Palisades last week.

Alissa VandeBunte won the girls race representing Southern Lehigh with a time of 20:06.38, just ahead of teammate Katherine George who crossed in 20:06.70. In fact, the Spartans captured the first six places in the event for the girls.

Montana Muller was the Catty girls highest finisher taking 37th with a time of 25:53.03.

Other Catty girl finishers were: 41. Bethanie DeLucia 27:08.66; 42. Bree Sheldon 27:37.72; 43. Katherine Verenna 27:58.08; 48. Alexis Sheldon 31:45.21; 50. Makena Webber 33:17.90; 53. Dani Pluchinsky 33:33.51; 54. Tylar Treiber 33:53.56.

On the boys side, Ethan Bernstein of Saucon Valley took first with a time of 16:05.98. He was just ahead of Southern Lehigh’s Stephen Gray who timed in with a 16:06.38.

Ryder Faustner was Catty’s highest finisher for the boys taking 83rd with a time of 22:46.67.

Dieruff defeated Catasauqua in volleyball action 25-13, 25-22, 25-8.

Dieruff’s JV team also Catasauqua by scores of 25-15, 25-14.

For the Huskies, Salma Kassis had seven kills, Hanna Schoeppl added 19 service points and Giana Jarrah chipped in with 18 assists.
