Girls start off 2-1-1
The Whitehall girls soccer team isn’t off to a bad start, but they feel it could have been better.
“We have had a very challenging early season schedule,” said first-year head coach Chris Bleam. “To start 1-1-1 [in their first three games] is in some ways disappointing as we could easily be 3-0, but in other ways, it is teaching this young team the importance of paying attention to all the little details about the game and playing a full 80 minutes well.”
The girls started the season strong with a 3-0 victory over Northampton, which also happened to add a win to the now annual Cement Belt Challenge.
Kate Bonshak scored two goals and Kylee Cunningham added a third. Sophia Pittas had two assists with Kassidy Cunningham adding one.
Against Nazareth, the girls scored first thanks to another Kate Bonshak goal. But the Eagles would score twice in the second half, about 13 minutes apart, thanks to Haven Snyder and Brynn Schrei. Kassidy Cunningham would even things up at 2-2 and keeper Kay Solderitch kept the Eagles off the board the rest of the way.
Emmaus was up next, but the result was a 3-1 loss after playing to a 1-1 tie in the first half. Again it was Kate Bonshak who got the Zephs goal, but the Hornets got goals from Maddie Fey, Gianna Albanese and Madison Nader for the win.
The girls defeated Central 1-0 on Tuesday and had Parkland on the schedule on the road for Sept. 15 before hosting Stroudsburg on Sept. 19 under the lights.
“The team is progressing but will need to continue to improve to qualify for the postseason,” Bleam said.
For the Whitehall boys, the building process continues after losing 16 seniors, 10 of which started. The team sits at 1-4 on the season thus far.
