Boys soccer off to a solid start this year

Before the season, Catasauqua boys’ soccer coach Mike Baclawski had some high expectations.

So far, he hasn’t been disappointed.

The Roughies began the week with an overall 3-3 mark, their latest outing being a satisfying 2-1 win over Bangor. It came after a 7-0 blanking from Saucon Valley followed by a convincing 5-1 win over Tamaqua.

Even though the Roughies have been battling consistency, they have been pleased with their overall results.

“I’m really happy for our guys right now,” said Baclawski. “The win for us over Bangor was huge. They are always one of the better teams around and it was nice for us to follow up on the other win (Tamaqua).

The Roughies began the season with a 1-0 win in a tight contest against Northern Lehigh in which Grant Gebhardt scored the winning goal in overtime.

“We expect to play a lot better against them,” said Baclawski. “We worked through the game and it was a nice walk-off win for us to begin the season.”

The next morning, Catty traveled to Lehighton and they were on the short end of a 6-0 score in a game in which they trailed 1-0 at the half.

They followed that with a tough 3-2 loss to Wilson, a game they had circled on their calendars to get their first win in five years against the Warriors. From there, the Roughies ran into a buzz saw in their 7-0 loss at Saucon Valley.

Baclawski cited the play of John Dweck, who had been a mainstay for them all season, as well as Bryan Contreras. Devon Troxell, who has been working his way through injuries.

“John (Dweck) has been our best finisher and he is a dangerous player,” said Baclawski. “We have put him up top for us lately and it has paid off. Bryan (Contreras) has really worked hard and also has been a strong offensive player for us. “

Baclawski also has been pleased with the play of goalie Samuel Safadi, who has been answering the bell lately.

“Samuel (Safadi) has come up big for us lately,” said Baclawski. “He really has been playing the box. He has pieced together some strong games for us.”

Baclawski has worked on team bonding events, such as hosting spaghetti dinners, that have proved to be effective. He is optimistic it can have lingering effects.

“Overall, we have a strong chemistry on this team,” he said. “We have a good sense of camaraderie from the seniors to the freshmen. We believe we can be a very good team.

‘I have been very proud of their efforts and I know they will be more to come.”
