LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

EHS girls volleyball looks strong

Emmaus girls volleyball head coach Gwen Millets was able to play most of her deep bench Monday night as the Green Hornets took care of Pocono Mountain East in three straight games 25-13, 25-10, and 25-10 for their fourth regular season win in four tries.

It has been like that for a majority of the Hornets’ wins as Emmaus (4-0) has yet to lose a game in any regular season match. They beat East Stroudsburg North, Southern Lehigh and Stroudsburg all in three straight games.

“I think each season you’re going to have your ups and your downs,” said Millets. “With our girls right now, they’re playing really well and are a strong team together. They’re all very close and have a good connection on and off the court. That is certainly helping us as the foundation of a good team.

“They’re working hard at practice, and our defense and intensity has been high. I’m very happy with the way things are going right now. We just need to get better day-by-day.”

Emmaus continued to look strong against the Cardinals Monday. With strong defense, hitting and serving, the Hornets have had the exact recipe needed for a winning volleyball team.

“Tonight was more about stressing the communication piece,” said Millets. “I wanted us to work a lot on that, and our footwork. We want to run a faster, more dynamic offense, and keep the game at our own pace. As long as we get better at that, we will continue to play well. We always believe in fundamentals here, and if you do them right, you have nothing to worry about.”

Macy Van Den Elzen (11 kills), Alyson Bohman (7 kills) and Adelina Rivera-Woolard (6 kills) made their presence known in front of the net. Tiffany Hoppes had 11 digs, while teammate Rebecca Dalstead finished with 7 digs. Caroline Bond tallied 29 assists and 7 digs in the win.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pocono Mountain East, comes just two days after Emmaus won the Levesque Invitational at Penncrest High School for the fifth consecutive year, winning five matches on its way to the title.

The Green Hornets also came in second place in the First Kill Invitational at Freedom on Sept. 3, in their first real action of the year.

“I think those tournaments really helped us and will help us prepare for the Lehigh Valley teams, which I think is such a tough league year in and year out,” Millets said. “It was great to come out and win at Penncrest again last weekend, and even though we finished second at First Kill, it was the girls’ first time playing for real with each other this season, and I think they did great. I’m proud of what they’ve done so far.”

Emmaus has a tough stretch ahead. A road game at Becahi tonight is followed by a home tilt against Liberty tomorrow, the team that beat the Hornets to win the First Kill Invitational. Then a matchup with rival Parkland on the road Monday.
