Church group honors officers
Lois McAllister and Susan Marakovits stopped by the Catasauqua Police Station with a gift for each of the police officers last week.
Marakovits and McAllister are members of the Morning Glories women’s group at Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church on Fourth Street in Catasauqua.
The church group wanted to do something for local officers in light of all the renewed dangers police are facing.
“We wanted to do something to show our appreciation. It’s not a lot, but I hope these little gifts show we support their efforts,” McAllister said.
The Morning Glories group has a history of supporting local organizations.
“We started this group in 2008,” Marakovits said. “It’s a spiritual and outreach program. Anyone is free to join. We have 25 members now.”
The Catasauqua Area Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Lutheran World Relief Health Kits and Socks for Seniors are among the many organizations it supports.
“We meet again in January to decide on our projects for the first six months,” McAllister said.
Morning Glories member Karen Frakenfield had the idea to do something positive for local police officers, Marakovits said.
Janice Charvala talked with police administrator Lauren Porobenski and collectively they came up with the idea of donating a Wawa gift card to each of the officers on the force.
The gifts are supported by a free-will contribution from the Morning Glories members.
On Aug. 30, Marakovits and McAllister visited police headquarters to present the gift cards to Police Chief Douglas Kish.
“It is always great to know that people in the community appreciate the efforts of our officers and the job they do,” Kish said, accepting the gift cards on behalf of his officers.
