Lady Falcons have pivotal week ahead

Even without being at full strength for the beginning of the season, the Salisbury girls’ tennis team has gotten off to a solid start. The Lady Falcons even had to do it on the fly.

Missing No. 2 singles player Claudia Crouthamel for their first three matches due to an illness, head coach Rob Benson had to adjust his lineup through the first six matches. And the changes have certainly played in the Lady Falcons’ favor.

With Claudia Crouthamel out those first three matches, sister Lil Crouthamel slid into the No. 2 position and the rest of the Falcons moved up a slot as well. The result through the early going is a 4-2 record for Salisbury with a pivotal week in Colonial League play just ahead.

“We finally got the whole team back together,” Benson said. “Claudia with mononucleosis didn’t help us. So everybody was playing up a notch. Leandra [Roelker] is playing just super.”

The lone Lady Falcon that did not play at a different position early on was Roelker, Salisbury’s No. 1 singles player. The senior hasn’t lost a match this season, going 6-0, including a victory in straight sets over Moravian Academy’s Skyler Hammand.

As a team, Moravian Academy hasn’t lost yet in 2016, which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. But it’s impressive to see Roelker win in such dominant fashion to an opponent she split with last fall.

“I think she [Roelker] has a good chance to get into the district singles finals,” Benson said. “She beat Moravian 6-2, 6-2. They played last year and they split last year.”

Lil Crouthamel has played well at No. 2 in replacing her sister, but figures to move back to the No. 3 position with Claudia set to return on Tuesday against Southern Lehigh. Lil has only lost two matches all season-against Moravian’s Neelam Ferarri (6-3, 6-1) and Saucon Valley’s Meghan Altemose (6-7, 6-0, 6-3).

“She’s been doing well,” Benson said. “And one of those losses was to Moravian. She lost to Saucon Valley, but the other girl played well.”

Claudia has been back for three matches. Her latest-a 6-0, 6-0 win over Palisades’ Audrey Giovino-was her first back on the singles circuit. She also played at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as she worked her way back into shape.

“Saucon Valley was a pretty good win,” Benson said. “This is the big we because we play Southern Lehigh tomorrow (Tuesday) and Notre Dame (Green Pond) on Thursday. That should be a big week for us. We’ll find out about us.”

When things return to normal, as they should start this week, Vivian Rogers, who played much of the season at No. 3 singles) will be playing with Anna Bishop at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Sydney Kramer and Katie Denver will be at No. 2 doubles.

“She [Rogers] did a good job for us,” Benson said. “They haven’t had any real challenges yet. They played doubles together for one match and that was Palisades, and they won that. We’ll find out against Southern Lehigh tomorrow.”

Results from that match against Southern Lehigh were not available at time of press. Thursday’s match at Notre Dame starts at 4 p.m.
