Golfers get their second victory
The Whitehall golf team took advantage of some familiar surroundings to notch their second win of the season.
Last week’s win over East Stroudsburg South was at their home course of Willow Brook where they defeated the Cavaliers 456 to 477.
Not only does the victory double their win total from last season, but it was significant in another respect. Head coach John Conrad said that it’s the lowest score they’ve posted since he took over the program four years ago. Granted, it was at their home course, but they still had to make shots.
“You still have to get it done,” said Conrad.
And making those shots were Patrick Skinner, Hunter Kern, Ben Antonchak, Noah Zahradnik, Tyler Ringenberger and Leah Coleman.
Skinner led the way with an 86, posting the second best round of the day along with ESS’s James Delaria. Kern followed with a 90, while Antonchak posted a 92 and Zahradnik finished with a 93. Both Ringenberger and Coleman finished with a 95.
Conrad was particularly pleased with two of his golfers tying for fifth during the match. Of the eight players they bring to every match, they keep the five best scores. And when a couple of players have earned the right to have their matching scores qualify as one of the five best for the day, it means the level of competition within the program is on the rise. He said when that occurs, it gives him more options.
It’s a far cry from when he took over the program when he just had the minimum number of golfers competing each match.
“That’s a good thing for your program,” he said.
In fact, he liked the play from all eight of his golfers that day. He said he’s been seeing a number of personal bests and they’ve been progressing from week to week.
“We’re on the right direction,” said Conrad.
Conrad has seen their steady improvement and that’s been encouraging. He said that’s the only thing that he can ask of his players as a coach. And so far they’ve been responding. The 456 was one of those moments where that steady improvement took root and gave them their best round in four years.
The Zephyrs sit at 2-9 and will continue with a match against Freedom.
