Brett paces Catty to victory with six TDs
Andrew Brett never recorded six touchdowns in a game. Fortunately, his team also recorded a first in two-plus seasons.
Brett threw for five touchdowns and ran for another and the Roughies recorded as many points as they had on Thanksgiving Day in 2013 as Catty edged Northern Lehigh, 39-33, to notch their first win of the season last week.
“This was the first time I ever did something like this,” said Brett, a junior beginning his first year at the helm. “I threw four touchdown (passes) in a JV game and four in a game against Salisbury last year. It was a crazy, exciting game that we were glad to win. It was a huge win for our team.”
Brett hit Ryan Greene on touchdown strikes of 34 and 22 yards (six catches for 100 yards total), Miguel Hernandez with 49 and nine yards (11 for 148), and Corey Raysely with 31 yards (five for 43). He finished the game completing 25 of 32 passes for 302 yards and also had an interception.
The previous week against Salisbury, Brett hit 25 of 35 attempts for 297 yards with three interceptions.
“Against Salisbury, we were in it, but we shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers,” added Brett. “I’ll take the blame for that.”
For Brett, it was just a matter of repetition. He also credited his early success to the work of quarterbacks coach Dan Kendra.
“I really felt a lot more comfortable out there,” said Brett. “The previous week, I was pretty nervous. I spent a lot of time during the summer with coach Kendra and that has really helped me.
“After the first game, I watched a lot of film with the coaches and I knew what I had to fix.”
Brett also has made a smoother adjustment this season with the return of a veteran and explosive receiving corps of Greene, Raysely, and Hernandez. He also cited the backfield tandem of Dylan Mitchell (18 rushes for 81 yards) and KJ Reiss (11 for 25), who both are off to solid starts, as well as a veteran line.
“It’s great to have those guys to throw to,” said Brett of his receivers. “I know if I can get them the ball, they can turn it into a big gain. Our running backs also have been doing a great job and our line had been opening the holes.”
The Roughies face a huge obstacle when they host Pen Argyl Friday night. The Green Knights will enter Alumni Field with a 1-1 record after they were blasted by Saucon Valley, 42-7 last week.
“I watched them in their first game against Wilson (a 28-7 win),” said Brett. “They are big and have some skill people, but I think we will be alright. It will be a big test for our team.”
Another early victory can also further enhance the team’s building reputation.
“I still think team’s overlook us because of our record last year,” said Brett. “We are playing with a lot of confidence right now, and we are ready to challenge any team in the league.”
