Zephyr athletes continue careers in college

Swimmer Mike Haggerty is going to York College this fall. A member of the varsity team for four years, Haggerty served as co-captain for this year’s team.

He will be joining a swimming program that’s led by Greg Doyle who will be entering his second season this year. The Spartans compete in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Last year’s team also featured Kyle Walthall who won the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championships this past March.

Haggerty, a 2016 district qualifier in the 200 and 500 freestyle, will be swimming that stroke at York.

He said that a family friend suggested he apply to York, and when he learned that they offered swimming that boosted his interest. And once he spike to coach Doyle, he knew York was the right fit.

Haggerty said that he will be studying elementary and special education. Having that double major offered at York was another strong selling point.

“That was another thing that made we want to go there,” said Haggerty.

Haggerty has also acted in school productions at Whitehall and has left that avenue open while attending York. He wants to see what his course load is like as well as his commitment to swimming, and then will look into other areas of interest.

His goal at York is to perform up to his own standards.

“I just want to do the best I can do at York,” said Haggerty. “I’m just grateful they reached out to me.”

Haggerty set his personal bests this season at the district meet and hopes he can build off those times his freshman season.

As a student-athlete at Whitehall, Haggerty said that he learned to give each endeavor everything he had.

“Do the best you can each and every time out,” said Haggerty. “Never give up no matter what happens.”

His fondest moment came watching teammate Daniel Jablonski break the school record in the 200 freestyle at the district meet. He got to witness his teammate progress as a swimmer, and was happy that he achieved that record.

“I was really proud of him to go that far,” said Haggerty.

Gabrielle Molitoris will be headed north to play softball at Wilkes University Molitoris, who was a league all-star in 2014, will be playing for head coach Sarah Maulorico who will be entering her third season at the helm next year.

The infielder will join the Colonels who finished 13-23 overall and were 3-13 in the Freedom division of the Middle Atlantic Conference.

Molitoris brings a strong bat and a steady glove to the Colonels.

Juniata is a Division III school with its girls volleyball program competing in the Landmark Conference which is affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
