Cement worker of the month: Don Levonian, Essroc, Nazareth

Mr. Don Levonian was raised in Wynnewood and graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1972, where he was on the track team and was a school photographer. Kobe Bryant, NBA star, was also a graduate.

“I had a keen interest in chemistry. The school had excellent teachers and resources and gave me a great education,” Don says.

Don later graduated from Drexel University with a degree in chemistry. The school participated in a co-op program with industry, so Mr. Levonian spent six months at the Martin Marietta Cement Plant in Bay City, Mich. There he utilized his chemistry education.

“I have a 40-year odyssey in the cement industry, working at plants in West Virginia, Virginia, Florida and here at Essroc,” he recalls.

Today, he is the quality control manager at the Nazareth plant.

The position is very challenging. In order to ensure quality cement, the process is closely monitored from quarry to the finished product. The cement must meet state, federal and customer requirements.

“I work with all departments to optimize cost and quality,” he says. “We always attempt to improve the quality of the product. Days can be stressful but rewarding. Our goal is to satisfy our many loyal customers.”

All department heads meet daily to coordinate the plant’s operation.

“We are a hardworking team with emphasis on safety, quality and the environment,” Don says.

He also works with Mr. Joys Riva, operation manager, and plant director Munzer Ghosh, both fine men.

Mr. Levonian states, “I work in an amazing industry and am grateful it has given me and my family a good living.”

Don has been married to the former Cathy Laurie for 40 years. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in health management and is a member of the Thomas Jefferson University medical staff.

They are proud of daughters Jennifer and Lisa and three grandchildren. They reside in Flourtown.

Mr. Levonian truly enjoys his 40 years in the industry and is a dedicated employee. I wish much success to him and all my friends at Essroc, who carry the 150th-year heritage of Saylor Cement.
