LV Hunting, Fishing Extravaganza starts
This weekends Lehigh Valley Hunting and Fishing Extravaganza’s 11th annual outdoors show, complete with the gamut of outdoor related equipment and informational displays and held at the Kempton Fairgrounds, is not strictly for adults. The show’s main theme is focused on kids, and as Bob Danenhower, show co-director says, “When others talk the walk, we walk the walk and give kids first hand knowledge of the lifelong pursuits of hunting, fishing and the great outdoors.”
Aside form the free live trout fishing in the fairgrounds creek with Huck Finn type cane poles and hosted by Rothrock Motors, The Storage Centers and Limestone Springs Trout Nursery, kids have a chance to shoot a bow, BB gun, learn about forestry, enter the Jr. Mr. and Miss Lehigh Valley Outdoorsman Competition for prizes, meet Smokey the Bear and much more.
The aforementioned competition is open to all boys and girls ages 16-and-under. The contest includes a Jr. Laser Shot (computer based by Berks County Sportsman’s Clubs), Jr. Grouse Shoot (computerized by the Grouse Association), BB Gun Challenge (a Daisy BB gun range run by Lehigh County F&G Association with range and ammo provided by Cabela’s retail manager Ron Leh, Jr.), Bowmen’s Challenge run by United Bowhunters of PA, and a Forestry Identification contest hosted by DCNR Bureau of Forestry. The top competitor (boy or girl) will receive a $200 Cabela’s gift card and a Pro Fishing Stik rod and reel. Winners will be announced through a press release and prize packs mailed to the top three winners.
For all scouts who attend (boys and girls), they’ll be admitted free to the show when in uniform and will have a chance to win cash prizes by winning the Scouts Challenge. This contest will be more complex than the Jr. Outdoorsman contest as it entails a 10-station course. The stations have a variety of events that many scouts are familiar with. They primarily consist of a tomahawk throw, blackpowder shoot, trapping challenge, casting accuracy, knot tying and BB-gun marksmanship shoot, to name a few. There will be cash prizes awarded to the top three scout winners of $100, $50 and $25 respectfully. Last year, the event drew scouts from three states and 23 troops.
As an added bonus, all kids have a chance to win a free Remington 870 Youth Shotgun courtesy of Ed Razzis of East Penn Re-Builders. The drawing for the shotgun will take place at the end of the show and the gun must be picked up within two weeks after the show. Registration for the gun will be at the information booth in the Main Hall.
For adults, and a newcomer to the show, Stihl’s Power Tool Display and demos will be on site. Harold Luther, Stihl sales rep, says he’ll have the company’s all-tool trailer from which he’ll perform chainsaw demos throughout the show on the proper and safe use of chainsaws, a device we know is the cause of sawing accidents and injuries.
Show hours are Sat., August 27 and Sunday, Aug 28 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children ages 8-12, and children under eight are free as are scouts and their leaders. As always, parking is free. The show is located off I-78 and the exit for Route 737N. From there just follow the signs to the show.
