Garner, Safadi ready to help Roughs as seniors
A few years ago, Jackie Garner and Selena Safadi encouraged each other to try out for the field hockey team. It was a moment that spawned a close relationship that has helped evolve through athletics.
Now, six years later, the duo is ready to help the Roughies’ field hockey program take the next step. Both Garner and Safadi are among nine seniors who are ready to make a difference.
“I really like the sense of camaraderie we have on and off the field,” said Garner. “I really feel comfortable as a team and how we have come together. It will be different because this is my last year and I feel like I just started. But I’m confident this can be a good experience.”
Garner recalled how her career began in seventh grade when she was looking to play a sport in the fall. She has been active in softball and track since middle school.
“I figured I would try it (field hockey) and I really liked it,” said Garner, who became a team captain the following year. “It was something new and it worked out well. I caught onto the sport pretty quickly and felt comfortable.
“I encouraged Selena (Safadi) to come out and it really has been a good experience for both of us.”
Safadi has appreciated her friend’s support.
“She (Garner) got me to do it,” said Safadi. “We are really close friends and knew we could make it a good experience. We play different positions on the field, but we really have a sense where we both are on the field.
“We do everything together and sports have helped us become closer.”
Another common element for them this season will be adjusting to a new coach. Assistant Julie Bisci will take over for Carrie Saul, who left for the same position at Northampton. Both Garner and Safadi are confident their club can get into the mix for the league playoffs and advance past the first round of district play.
“It was surprising that she (Saul) left, but she got a teaching job there too and did what was best for her family,” said Bisci. “Coach Bisci has been with us the whole time here and we all know her well. It shouldn’t be that big of a change.
“But we have a good chemistry on this team and we want to get past the first round of districts this year.”
“We need to get past the first round,” added Garner. “We all believe we have the potential and ability to do that this year.”
Garner is still unsettled about her college choice, but she plans to pursue an education degree in hopes of landing a guidance counselor position. Safadi plans to attend Lehigh Community College and then attend a four-year school.
In the meantime, the duo plans to make the most of their senior year and support each other.
