Many former Hornets will play final seasons in fall

Many Emmaus High School gradautes will be competing for college athletic teams this fall.

DeSales University’s Lisa Wallitsch enters her fourth and final season on the volleyball court after a standout junior season. The senior setter played in all 120 sets for the Bulldogs, tallying 1,232 of the team’s 1,387 assists on the season. She also recorded 91 kills in 2015, and her 3,001 assists through three seasons ranks her fourth all-time in school history. She is just over 1,000 shy of Sharon Uliana’s school record of 4,096.

Ever since stepping foot on DeSales’ campus, Esther Younger has played a vital role for the defense of the women’s soccer team. After starting in 39 games over her first two seasons, Younger started in 20 more on defense in 2015 when the Bulldogs won the MAC Freedom Championships. En route to a Mac Freedom All-Conference First Team selection on defense, she led the team with 1,789 minutes of field time and played a key role in nine shutouts for DeSales.

While she was just a freshman at Saint Francis University last year, Shannon McGinnis was one of the top goal scorers for the women’s soccer team. In 19 games played, which included 15 starts, McGinnis scored four goals (second on team) on just five shots on goal. She logged 1,512 minutes of field time mostly as a defender, good for seventh on the team.

Cabrini College’s A.J. Bishop was the go-to guy for the Cavaliers a year ago. He was tied for the team in goals scored with 10, while earning All-CSAC First Team and NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team selections for his stellar play. He helped lead the Cavaliers to 15 wins last year, a CSAC championship, and a spot in the NCAA tournament. He has scored 34 goals and tallied 13 assists over his first three seasons.

Senior defender Shauna Poling enters her final season with the Moravian College field hockey team. As one of the top defenders last year, she played in 15 of the Greyhounds’ 18 games. She also recorded one goal and one assist from that position.

Bloomsburg University senior cross country runner Amber Csrenko is days away from beginning her final collegiate season. She came in 51st place at the PSAC Championships with a time of 24:11. In the PSAC Track and Field Outdoor Championships in June, Csrenko took 18th in the 1,500-meter run.

Liberty University cross country runner Lindsey Bray enters her senior season as one of the Flames’ top runners. In the Big South Championships last year, Bray ran a 19:05.57 in the 5K event to place 29th. That finish was a solid improvement from her sophomore and freshman years, where she placed 43rd and 62nd, respectively.

The Bloomsburg University field hockey team opens its season on September 2, and one former Hornet will be suiting up for her final season. Senior midfielder Lexi Roth saw action in 11 games last year when the Huskies went 10-10.

Junior defender/midfielder Charlie Jerry appeared in and started 19 games for the DeSales men’s soccer team last year. He recorded six shots from the field, and scored a goal against Delaware Valley in the final two weeks of the season.

Sophomore Corrine Justus opened her collegiate career with 72 total blocks for the Philadelphia University women’s volleyball team. That mark ranked her third for the Rams. She also recorded 162 kills In 22 matches.

Seton Hall University’s John Philbin helped anchor a strong defensive unit on the men’s soccer team, appearing in all 16 games (all of but one were starts). In those 16 games, his 1,382 minutes of field time ranks amongst the team’s best. He played in at least 90 minutes in 14 of those games.

George University junior Joanna Hawkins played in all 19 games for the Hoyas last year. She returns in the midfield in 2016 looking to continue her solid play on the field.

Kayla Mack was one of Slippery Rock’s top defenders on the field hockey team last year, and she’s hoping 2016 brings more of that success on the back line. Mack, an incoming junior defender, led the team last year with five defensive saves and scored one goal in 18 games (all starts).
