Register for soup competition at the library Sept. 10
The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7 to discuss “The Hollow Ground” by Natalie Harnett. The book for Oct. 5 is “The Nightingale” by Kristen Hannah.
New at the library are museum passes for the Allentown Art Museum, America on Wheels and the Liberty Bell Museum.
Mexican Folkloric Dance Group Xochiquetzal will perform 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the library. The dance group of six dancers and a singer are led by teacher and director Martha Monroy and strive to preserve the traditions and culture of Mexico.
Businesses and individuals can compete for the title of “Lower Macungie Library’s Best Soup” at A Taste of Soup noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 10. There is an entry fee for competitors and an admission fee for tasters who will receive tickets to vote. For more information, contact the circulation desk.
The library is sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. Sept. 24 for the National Book Festival or for sightseeing. The bus leaves 6:30 a.m. and returns 8 p.m. Reservation deadline is Sept. 10.
The library is a PokeGym and a PokeStop for those who have joined the Pokemon Go craze.
The library offers “Book a Librarian” services for one-on-one help with using eReaders, downloading eBooks, tablets or computer programs such as Excel and Microsoft Word.

The library is currently accepting book donations for the fall book sale. The library will not accept textbooks, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, magazines, outdated medical or travel books or dirty or water damaged books. Sorting of books continues 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays.
The Friends will hold a one day end of summer book sale 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 in the library. Setup will start 8:30 a.m. Aug. 26 and take down will be 8:30 a.m. Aug. 29. Any help with the book sale is greatly appreciated.
The Friends of the Library will have their next meeting 10 a.m. Sept. 17.
The Lower Macungie pool is open noon to 7 p.m. daily through Aug. 28. The pool will be closed Aug. 29 through Sept. 2 and will re-open noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 3 to 5 for Labor Day weekend. For more information, check the website www.lowermac.org.

The Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at the fire station at Sauerkraut Lane. There will be information on fire prevention, face painting, fire truck tours, Medevac helicopter, food and beverages.
The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 11th Annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays.

Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the Lower Macungie Community Center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 to noon Saturday Sept. 1 through Nov. 30.
A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last 10 years, 903 boxes of donated items were sent to 110 soldiers.
There will be a father-daughter dance “Halloween Party” for girls enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 8 at the community center. To register, call 610-966-6924.
Miller-Keystone Blood Center and Lower Macungie Township will hold a blood drive 4 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the community center. Pre-register by calling 610-966-6924 for an appointment.
The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Sept. 19 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.
The community center offers a number of activities. Programs for the fall include ballroom dance classes, Zumba, guided meditation/relaxation, Tai Chi, chair yoga, card making classes, Pilates and Cize Live. Children’s programs include tennis lessons, art classes, Kindermusik and cooking classes.
There will be a safe sitter program 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17. Registration is limited.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.
Yard waste site summer hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are now required for dropoff. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
