LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

CHS pleased with summer

Catasauqua is confident that their overall summer performance can be a prelude toward a successful winter season.

The Roughies recently ended a busy summer schedule with a strong showing at SportsFest. In the tournament, they opened with an avenged win over Quakertown before they dropped games to Easton and Wayne (NJ).

It marked the end to a two-month span in which the Roughies played 30 games in 62 days with their participation in SportsFest, the North Catty and Catty leagues and the Stellar Tournament.

“We had a lot of games,” said head coach Eric Snyder. “It did seem like we were playing every other day. But it was a good summer for us. Our kids played well and we had around 15 or 16 kids at each game.”

At SportsFest, Snyder noted how his team encountered a range of emotions.

“We played really well against Quakertown,” he said. “They pressed us throughout the whole game, but we held our own. We had to face three 6-foot-7 kids from Easton and that was a problem for us.

“The team from Wayne came out and hit three 3-pointers to start the game and they built a double-digit lead. We were down 32-21 at halftime, but we couldn’t get any closer to them.”

Returnee Isaiah Graves and incoming freshman Jalen Green were the team’s two leading scorers during the summer, and the Roughies developed their potential starting lineup in the process.

Colin Hawk, the lone incoming senior, will likely open at the four spot and he’ll be joined by Andrew Brett at the two-guard and Miguel Hernandez at center.

“Colin Hawk is a very smart basketball player,” said Snyder. “He is always in a good position and he worked on his shot. He began to establish his presence down low. He is a very dependable player.

“Brett also is a very smart player, and Hernandez is intelligent and aggressive.”

Snyder also was impressed with the play of D.D. Martinez, Andrew Martinez, and Cam Ritter, all of whom should see plenty of playing time this winter.

“D.D. can be a very deadly shooter when he is on,” said Snyder. “He has to work on his consistency. Andrew has worked very hard and has really improved his game.

“Cam (Ritter) has really shown that he can play at the varsity level. He is always sticking his nose into the pile. He also works hard and makes things happen.”

The glaring possible weakness for the Roughies will be height. Hawk arguably is the tallest player at 6-2. Still, Snyder believes his team can adjust.

“We’ll need to box out farther from the basket,” he said. “We need to work on it. We also have to be relentless and intense. But I really like how we have responded so far.”
