Grace Ida Schleicher

Grace Ida Schleicher, 91, a resident of Luther Crest, South Whitehall Township, formerly of Mount Penn, Reading, died July 22, 2016.

Born in New Tripoli, she was the daughter of the late Elmer W. and Ida M. (Kistler) Fisher.

Her husband of 57 years, Ernest W. Schleicher, died in 2013.

She took the “Berksy” train from New Tripoli to Slatington High School, from which she graduated in 1942.

After working for the Army Signal Corps in Philadelphia, she returned to New Tripoli and worked as a teller in the New Tripoli National Bank.

She was fluent in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect and volunteered with her husband at the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University.

She was a member of the Lynn-Heidelberg Historical Society as well as the Order of the Eastern Star.

She and her husband were long-time members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, where they enjoyed volunteering, especially with the many community outreach ministries.

They resided in Mount Penn more than 40 years before moving to Allentown in 2010.

Her survivors include sons David and his wife, Barbara, of Statesville, N.C., Tom and his wife, Janet, of Richmond, Va., John and his wife, Barbara, of New Freedom; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Bond, of Alexandria, Va.

Her memorial service will be 11 a.m. Aug. 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 527 Washington St, Reading.

Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, New Tripoli.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, PA 19529 or to a charity of one’s choice.
