Coplay: St. Peter to hold Aug. 7 festival

One of the events in Coplay this year, bringing a large crowd, is St. Peter Roman Catholic Church’s 62nd annual homecoming picnic Aug. 7. Families from across the country will return for the parish’s summer festival.

Hundreds of people will pack the South Fifth Street grounds to get reacquainted, enjoy home-style food and dance to some polka music.

A 10:30 a.m. polka Mass by the Emil Schanta Band will be celebrated, after which the spacious grounds will fill up with families noon-10 p.m.

The church-made pierogies are always a must for festival-goers, as is the New England clam chowder, ethnic dishes, pizza, hot dogs and burgers.

The Schanta button box accordion band performs 1-5 p.m., followed by the Mob Band.

Bingo will be held in the church’s lower-level hall.

The picnic will take place rain or shine.

Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association’s annual community fund drive that was scheduled for July will now be held in August. A mix-up with the U.S. Postal Service in getting out the mailers caused the delay.

***

A Dip-N-Dance for youngsters at Parkway Pool will be held 6-9 p.m. Aug. 12.

The pool closes for the summer Aug. 28.

***

The last meeting for Coplay Community Days Committee, before its Aug. 26-28 event, will be held at borough council chambers 7 p.m. Aug. 15.

Final last-minute preparations are on the agenda.
