Council Borough Council members had a discussion about continuing the police department’s K-9 program. During the July 18 council meeting, there seemed to be an underlying tone that the program was not a high priority.
The police department is currently raising money to acquire a new police dog. Jack, the present K-9, is scheduled to retire at the end of the year.
One of the concerns expressed by Kish is that Jack is often not socially compatible with some people. According to Kish, the department is searching for a dog with a better social disposition.
“We think the dog’s disposition will allow us to be out in the public with her more often,” he said.
Council offered a vote of confidence to continue the program.
The decision to raise money for a new dog was made by the police department. The early efforts have been very successful.
Council did reinforce its position about the K-9 program. Money is allocated for the program.
Police Chief Douglas Kish asked to move forward to acquire a new K-9 even though all the funds have not been collected.
“We are confident that we can raise the money we need for the dog and the training,” Kish said. The cost is $13,000 for the dog and training.
Councilwoman Jessica Kroope questioned why there was a concern about the program.
“Taxpayers see the value in the program,” she said. “Council was never asked to budget for a new K-9, but we could take funds from other programs if necessary.”
The council instructed Kish to move forward and acquire a new dog as soon as possible.
