Richard L. “Chubby” Matthias Sr., 81 , of New Tripoli, died July 25, 2016, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

He and his wife Barbara A. (Shook) Matthias celebrated their 20th wedding aniversary in February.

Born in Kempton, he was a son of the late Robert C. and Naomi E. (Bailey) Matthias Sr.

Employed by Lehigh County in the maintenance department at Cedarbrook, South Whitehall, for 16 years, he retired in 1997.

Later working for the Lynn Township Park and Recreation Department, as well as the sewer department, he also worked briefly at the Lynn Township Transfer Station.

He was currently a custodian for Union Cemetery, Slatington.

A member of the New Tripoli Fire Company and the Ontelaunee Rod and Gun Club, New Tripoli, he assisted with the fish hatchery program.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Debra A. (Lester) Koch, Dianne R. Matthias and her husband, Alex Rodriguez, all of Catasauqua, June L. (John) Tatkovshy, of New Tripoli, and Joanne M.Wodecki of Lee, Mass.; son Richard L. Jr.; and a stepdaughter Krystal (Henry) White, all at home; brother Lester C. Matthias of Wescosville; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by daughters Donna L. and Natalie A. Matthias and brothers Russell and Robert C. Jr.

His funeral service will be 11 a.m. July 29 in Robert S. Nester Funeral Home, 8405 Kings Highway, New Tripoli, with the calling hour beginning 10 a.m.

The Rev. Dr. David Charles Smith will officiate.

Interment will follow in Jacob’s Union Cemetery, Jacksonville, Lynn Township.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and/or to the New Tripoli Fire Company, sent to the funeral home, 8405 Kings Highway, New Tripoli, PA 18066.
