Catty falls at states but realizes it can win
For the Catasauqua Connie Mack team, it was an ending that wasn’t fitting.
The Roughies had a memorable season come to an abrupt halt on the fifth day of the double-elimination Connie Mack State Tournament at Limeport Stadium Tuesday night.
Catty dropped a 7-1 decision to Warrington of the Bux-Mont League, a team that was seeded first in their league with an regular season 18-2 record.
The defeat gave the Roughies an overall 17-8 mark, a tremendous turnaround from a 2-18 season last year.
“We hung in there for four innings,” said head coach Jim Kober about his team’s game against Warrington. “Then they went up 7-0. We scored a run and we started to threaten, but we just didn’t hit.
“They are a good team and can do all things well.”
Catty lost to Hellertown in the opening round of the Lehigh Valley Connie Mack playoffs, but they received a bid to the state tournament for their third-place finish in the overall standings.
From there, they lost to Emmaus, 4-2, in the opening round of the state playoffs, but they bounced back and avenged the earlier defeat to Hellertown with a convincing 9-1 victory.
Over the past few weeks, though, Kober noticed inconsistencies with the team’s hitting.
“We struggled hitting over our last seven games,” he stated. “Our bats started to go silent. But that’s baseball and the ways things can go. You don’t want to go into a slump at this time of the year, but we did.”
Overall, though, Kober certainly was pleased.
“They overachieved this year,” he said. “During the varsity season, they saw what they could possibly do. Then they had a good Connie Mack season, and they did some good things in the state playoffs.
“We were telling them all year that they can win, and they finally saw what they can do.”
The Roughies were paced during the summer by the one-two pitching punch of Rod Berger and Colin Hawk, who were the mainstays of the staff. Zach Bilder and Logan Davidson rounded out an impressive four-man staff.
That foursome also helped account for the bulk of the Roughies’ offense as well as Luke Creyer, Shane Dolan, Jayden June, Shaun McCartney, Corey Raysely, and Cam Ritter, all of whom consistently hit over .300 all season.
Kober sees his team’s success as a springboard for the future.
“The state tournament was good competition for us,” said Kober. “We can take this experience and go forth from here. They got 17 wins in Connie Mack and I can’t think back to a Catty team that has done this well lately.
“We have this core back next year and a number of them for two more years, and it can only mean good things for the program the next few years.”
