As I walked through a local retailer last week to buy some items for my son’s grad party, I almost fell over when I saw they started putting up the back-to-school section.

I yelled “NOOOO” and averted my eyes but the damage was done; I had seen it. How dare they invade my summer with thoughts of school?

Summer is too short, so my advice is enjoy it while it’s here and stay away from the first two aisles at a certain store.

The Salisbury Township summer playground program continues through July 29. Township children who are entering first grade through age 12 are eligible to participate. Program hours are 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evenings.

The Allentown Public Library Book Van will visit Salisbury parks July 22 at the following times: 9:30 a.m. Green Acres Park, 9:55 a.m. Lindberg Park, 10:30 a.m. Devonshire Park and 11 a.m. Laubach Park.

Movie night will be held 8 p.m. July 20 at Green Acres Park with a showing of “Zootopia.”

A calendar of weekly events is distributed weekly at each park. The program is free for participating children.

The annual Playground Day is scheduled July 27 with a rain date July 28 at Lindberg Park. Additional information is available at all playground locations.

If you need some ideas on things for your kids to do, go to www.wildlandspa.org. The Wildlands Conservatory in Emmaus has weekly camps for kids age four to teenagers. Some are half day, some are all day, some are by the water and some are in the woods. The titles of the camps include “Lizards and Wizards,” “Engineering in Nature,” “Secrets of the Forest” and “Ecowarriors Camp,” just to name a few. Sounds like fun to me.

The Salisbury cheerleaders are holding a fundraiser car wash 9 a.m. to noon July 23 at Salisbury High School. For a small fee, come out and get all the dust, grime and bird droppings off your car and make it shine like new.

Also 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 23, Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church will hold the fourth annual “Christmas in July” craft and vendor fair. In addition to crafts and assorted other vendor products, other activities include a bake sale, a book sale and a raffle. If you get hungry while you are there, breakfast and lunch foods will be available to purchase.

Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church will continue their summer concert series with the Jerusalem Singers performing 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2. The concert is free, but an offering will be collected with proceeds benefiting the Satori “Gift of Music” program.

The Carmike Promenade 16 summer kid series continues 10 a.m. every Wednesday and Thursday. The movie “Rio 2” will be shown July 20 and 21, “The Peanuts Movie” will be on the screen July 27 and 28.

The Devonshire drop-off center is open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 and 6. The days of operation are the first and third Tuesday and Saturday of the month. Summer evening hours are 3 to 6 p.m. July 25 and 28.
