Hokendauqua: HPPA announces 2016 scholarship award winners

Each year, Hokendauqua Park and Playground Association (HPPA) presents two scholarships named in honor of Bob Warke and Dale Horn. The HPPA Warke – Horn Scholarship is a testimonial in recognition to their lifelong dedication to the playground association and the youth of the area.

The scholarships are awarded to one male and female HPPA athlete who will be graduating from high school within the current fiscal year and continue their education at a university, college or trade school within the next six months. Criteria for scholarship selection includes high school academic performance, extracurricular activities and community service.

HPPA acknowledges and honors the following award winners for the Class of 2016:

Female athlete, $1000 cash award: Janelle Demko

Male athlete, $1000 cash award: Connor Ilgenfritz

Whitehall Football Booster Club will be holding a fundraiser 6-9 p.m. July 18 at Keystone Pub, 1410 Grape St., Whitehall, to assist the Cruz family, who lost their home and personal belongings in a fire June 30 on South Second Street, Hokendauqua. One of the Cruz children, Markes, is a lineman on the Zephyrs football team.

A portion of all sales that night will be donated to the Cruz family.

Disney’s “Aladdin,” a one-week workshop for students in grades 1-8, takes place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 18-22 with a performance July 22.

A two-week program for kindergarten through sixth-grade students will take place 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 1-12.

From 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 1-5, enroll your preschool child age 3-5 in the junior program, “Dancing Through the Fairy Tales.”

Programs take place at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3355 MacArthur Road.

A Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative community meal will be served 4:30-7 p.m. July 19 at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The free meal is guaranteed for the first 100 guests.

First Presbyterian Church of Hokendauqua, 3005 S. Front St., will host Vacation Bible School 6-8 p.m. July 25-27.

To participate in the program Deep Sea Discovery, children must be at least 3 years of age.

A light dinner will be served 5:30-6 p.m.; there is no charge for the dinner. The church will have crafts, snacks, games and, of course, a fun Bible lesson.

You do not have to be a member of the church to attend; all are welcome.

Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church will hold Vacation Bible School 6-8 p.m. July 25-29 with a closing program during the 10:30 a.m. service July 31.

VBS is for children age 3 (potty trained) through grade 6.

Registration forms can be picked up in the church office or narthex.

As a goal to be the “best small car show in Pennsylvania,” Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church is planning its eighth annual Wheels of Faith car show and craft fair event 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 20.

There will be cars, crafts, food, a 50/50 drawing, fun and more. Deejay “Johnny D” will provide music, and Allentown Police Department and its K-9s will conduct a presentation.

Dining will be available in the air-conditioned social hall from 8 a.m. to ending time with breakfast served until 10 a.m.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. is expected to be in attendance around 2 p.m.

The church again will donate part of the proceeds to Whitehall Food Pantry.

Rain date is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 21.

On Aug. 22, there will be a Miller-Keystone blood drive 4-7 p.m. at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.
