Carpenter Cup teams falls in tourney
Lehigh Valley’s Carpenter Cup team ended its Carpenter Cup Softball Classic run last Wednesday with a 2-1 loss in 10 innings against Tri-Cape after defeating Chester County 8-3 at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
“It was just one of those days,” said Lehigh Valley coach Blake Morgan. “We just didn’t get that break.”
Perhaps that is how Chester County felt when Lehigh Valley took a 2-0 lead away from them in their first game on Wednesday.
Northampton’s Jillian Muthard had an RBI triple in the fourth inning and Lehigh Valley never looked back. Muthard was also the winning pitcher.
Northampton teammate, Hallie Muffley, had a bunt single that was not covered, allowing Bethlehem Catholic’s Jess Indelicato to get to third base from first.
In the second game, which started an hour late, Tri-Cape scored one run in the first inning, and Lehigh Valley scored one run in the seventh.
Going into extra innings, Lehigh Valley was still confident, but a hit by Tri-Cape in the bottom of the tenth inning went over the heads of Lehigh Valley’s players and scored the winning run.
“Anytime you lose it hurts, and to lose in walk-off fashion,” Morgan said, “but I’m proud of them, they made relationships that will last, and they represented their community well. They were blessings.”
Lehigh Valley finished the tournament in fourth place with a record of 3-2.
Morgan, who was a first-year head coach for Lehigh Valley said he would do it again.
“It was great,” he said. [Former head coach] John Eyer did a tremendous amount to help. [Assistant] Ed Stinner was managing the game at third base. All my assistants made it easy.”
