LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LV wins two games

Lehigh Valley won two out of three games on Monday, the first day of the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

The double-elimination tournament was scheduled to resume on June 22 and end on June 23.

“There are good teams down there,” Lehigh Valley Coach Blake Morgan said, “and we have as good a team as any.”

Lehigh Valley won its first game against Delaware North 9-3.

Whitehall’s Kay Solderitch was the winning pitcher, and Ashlee Brosky hit a double in that game.

Lehigh Valley’s second game resulted in a 7-4 victory over Olympic Colonial.

Solderitch hit a home run in the fifth inning.

In its third game of the day, Lehigh Valley fell to Philadelphia Catholic 7-6.

“They got one big hit, but I told the girls you don’t let that one loss define you,” Morgan said. “If you’re still in it Wednesday, you’re grateful, and it’s a new day.”

Catching in all three games was Whitehall’s Mackenzie Guzy, who was hit by a pitch on the elbow in game one, and hit again in the exact same spot in game two.

“It was pretty bad to the extent I couldn’t straighten my arm,” Guzy said. “I hate sitting out, and I knew I had to fight through the pain to achieve our goal. In the last two innings, the pain got worse. I was extremely stiff.”

Still swollen and now black and blue, Guzy can’t wait for the next game.

“I feel like our team accelerated so well, and I think we have a really good chance of winning,” said Guzy. “I’m really pumped. I can’t wait.”

Morgan admired Guzy’s strength, among other things.

“Mackenzie stayed in there, and to do what she did…She quietly did some neat things,” said Morgan.

One of those things included throwing a runner out at second base in the first game.

“I can’t say enough good things about these girls. It’s neat to watch. They want to win, and they want to represent their community well.”
