Coplay has 3 Legion all-stars
When the Legion all-stars converge in Reading later this week, the Coplay-Fullerton team will be well represented at that annual affair.
Once again the Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball League will send its all-stars to First Energy Field in Reading to play the all-stars from Schuylkill-Berks American Legion Baseball League on June 24.
The sixth annual contest between the two teams in set to begin at 7:05, and proceeds from the game will be donated to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The game will be attended by college and professional scouts, giving the players the opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Representing Coplay-Fullerton will be three players. Third baseman Jose Berrios will be staring for the LVBL all-stars. Berrios is batting .500 with a slugging percentage of .778. Manager Jim Murphy said that Berrios, a former Fullerton Rambler, has impressed him with his defensive ability at the hot corner.
“He can make plays and change the game, himself,” said Murphy. “When a ball’s hit out to left field, he’s quick enough to get to third. And when a ball’s hit three-quarters into left field, he can dive and make the catch. I’ve seen him do that twice this year which shocked me.”
Also going is Austin Dreisbach. Dresibach will be the starting catcher. Dreisbach is batting .379 this season and has a slugging percentage of .517. He’s ben among the league leaders in pitching this season, posting an 0.84 ERA.
“He’s probably one of the better catchers in the league,” said Murphy. “He’s a good all-around player, good arm, good bat, good speed and knows the game.”
Alex Bruneio will also represent Coplay-Fullerton at the game. Bruneio is batting .444 and has a league-leading .889 slugging percentage. He’s also 3-0 as a pitcher this season.
“He’s a tremendous player,” said Murphy. “He can play first, he can play right of left. He also pitches and he’s a great pitcher, and he’s got great power with the bat.”
The LVLBL will be sending a total of 28 players to the all-star game.
