Students receive team honors

LCCC

Two Lehigh Carbon Community College students, Trisha Bankowski of Germansville and Samantha Eden of Slatington, were named members of the 2015-16 All-Pennsylvania Academic Team, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, Coca-Cola Corp. the state system of higher education and the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.

They were honored at the recent annual PACC meeting.

Bankowski is a general studies major at LCCC, planning to continue her education at East Stroudsburg University this fall.

Majoring in public health, she plans on joining the Peace Corps.

Bankowski is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

In addition to her studies she is a customer service representative at Wells Fargo Bank and volunteers at The Sanctuary at Haafsville, a no-kill animal shelter in Fogelsville.

Eden majors in psychology at LCCC and plans to continue her education at West Chester University this fall.

She is a member of LCCC’s Student Government Association; serving as the programming chair in fall of 2015 and is serving as the vice president for spring 2016.

Eden is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta, the national honor society in psychology for junior and community colleges.

She also has worked as a peer mentor and student worker at the Wellness Center during her time at LCCC.

Selection is competitive and students must have completed at least 36 credits at a community college and earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award.

An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process.

Each member of the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team receives a full two-year scholarship to any of the universities in the PASSHE and competes at the national level for scholarships from the All-USA Academic Team and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team

Stevenson U.

April Moyer of New Tripoli was one of the 2016 Relay for Life Committee members.

She served as the luminaria at the event.

This is the fifth annual Relay for Life at Stevenson University, Owings Mills, Md., held April 30 featuring an Olympic theme.

The team of students being recognized have planned exciting games, events, prizes and food to make the 12-hour long exciting for all who attend, as well as honoring those fighting the battle and those who have lost their lives to cancer.

Kutztown

Kutztown University Student Affairs in Higher Education Graduate Program recently inducted Cody Moyer and Max Shirey, both of Kutztown, into the Tau Chapter of Chi Sigma Alpha Student Affairs Honor Society International.

Chi Sigma Alpha Student Affairs Honor Society International is comprised of graduate students, alumni, faculty and student affairs professionals. It was founded in 2001 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Chi Sigma Alpha promotes and recognizes excellence in academics, research and service to the profession of student affairs.

Jeffrey Heminitz and Sarah Otto, both of Breinigsville, were recently inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society.

Inductees are adult students who have a minimum of a 3.2 grade point average and have successfully completed at least 24 credits at Kutztown University.

Kutztown

Louis Day of Kutztown was recently inducted into the Rho Psi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society in Political Science and Public Administration during a recent reception.

Members must be in the top one-third of the class.

Kutztown

Kutztown University Department of Criminal Justice recently inducted Ruben Rumbolo of Allentown, and Sarah Mickey and Erica Yurvati, both of Kutztown, into the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society.

Alpha Phi Sigma is the national criminal justice honor society.

Founded in 1942 at Washington State University, the society became affiliated with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 1976.

KU’s Kappa Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma was established in Spring 2008 with 13 founding members.

Chapter advisors are Dr. Pietro Toggia. Assistant advisor is Dr. AnnMarie Cordner.

To be eligible for membership, a student must be a criminal justice major or minor, have completed at least 40 credit hours, including at least four criminal justice courses, have an overall quality point average of 3.2 or higher, and have a quality point average in criminal justice courses of 3.2 or higher.

Derek Bennett of Kutztown was recently inducted into the Gamma Sigma Alpha Honor Society at Kutztown University, Kutztown.

Gamma Sigma Alpha is a national honor society for students who are members of a social Greek organization and have at least a 3.5 grade point average in their junior or senior year.

Gamma Sigma Alpha was founded at the University of Southern California on Nov. 9, 1989, by a group of scholastic achievers representing various fraternities and sororities dedicated to the advancement of higher education and academic accomplishment.

Gamma Sigma Alpha quickly grew to over 190 chapters in a little more than a decade.

Today, this honor society has more than 215 chapters and recognizes nearly 2,000 members of fraternities and sororities each year.
